The Google Translator is a tremendously powerful tool. It serves for machine translation of text in more than 70 languages, each of which can be used as the source and paired with any of the others as the target language.

While the web interface http://translate.google.com/ is more than appropriate for occasional usage, for people who are frequently writing something in a foreign language, it got the disadvantage of forcing a context switch, i.e. for the purpose of translation, the author is required to ...

1. switch to the web browser, and open the translator form,
2. enter/paste the text to translate,
3. select the language pair,
4. copy the result,
5. switch back to text processing,
6. paste the translation into the writing,

... and eventually writing may continue. This is not only a technical issue, but too often said context switch distracts the focus from the actual subject, and by this causes a more severe interruption from writing than it might seem in the first place.

InstantTranslator utilizes the Mac OS X System Service facilities. While most modern Mac Apps support text services, there are some infamous exceptions. Products from Adobe, Microsoft, OpenOffice.org, and others not on the Mac App Store, are incompatible with the Mac OS X Services, and therefore these applications won‘t recognize the translation services offered by InstantTranslator.

Anyway, countless high quality alternatives, iWork, Mellel, Mail, Safari, ..., do work though.
